St. Henry girls soccer avenged a regular-season loss and punched its ticket to the All 'A' Regional Final with a 2-0 shutout of Newport Central Catholic on Aug. 19 at James Rigney Memorial Stadium in Ludlow.
Anna Bain set the tone early, burying a goal in the fourth minute. The Crusaders carried that 1-0 lead deep into the second half before Hayden Harlan doubled the advantage in the 58th minute. Goalkeeper Kaylee Ryan did the rest, holding NewCath scoreless for the clean sheet.
The win was payback.
Newport Central Catholic beat St. Henry 1-0 on Aug. 15, in a regular-season meeting. Four days later, the Crusaders controlled the match from the opening whistle and never let the Thoroughbreds find the net.
St. Henry reached the semifinal by grinding past Beechwood in the first round on Aug. 17. That match at Beechwood ended 0-0 through regulation before the Crusaders won 4-1 on penalty kicks.
The two-game tournament run marks a return to the All 'A' postseason stage for a program with deep roots in the event. St. Henry won All 'A' state championships in 2008, 2009 and 2011 and captured regional titles through 2012, according to the school's official athletic records. The Crusaders also won the 2010 KHSAA state championship, the program's only large-school title, finishing 24-2-1 that season under coach Steve Lorenz, according to a LinkNKY retrospective on the program's history.
St. Henry's opponent in Saturday's All 'A' Regional Final on Aug. 22 has not yet been identified. St. Henry Athletics posted on X announcing the advancement but did not name the other semifinal winner or list the game's location and kickoff time.
