Northern Kentucky Water District joined four regional agencies to promote Ohio River protection this week.
The effort marks Source Water Protection Week, organized by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and running Sept. 27 through Oct. 3. NKWD, Sanitation District No. 1 (SD1), the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission and two Cincinnati-area utilities are participating, the NKY Tribune reported.
NKWD draws most of its drinking water from the Ohio River and serves nearly 300,000 people across Kenton, Campbell and parts of Boone, Grant and Pendleton counties. Its three treatment plants can process up to 64 million gallons per day, according to the district.
NKWD President and CEO Lindsey Rechtin said the river "is a shared resource, and ensuring its water remains safe and reliable requires the commitment of everyone."
SD1, which also serves Northern Kentucky, said its treatment facilities prevent more than 105,000 pounds of waste from entering the Ohio River each day. SD1 General Counsel Brian Ellerman said the agency is marking 80 years of service.
Residents can help protect source water by properly disposing of chemicals, picking up pet waste and keeping litter out of storm drains.
