Notre Dame Academy graduate Natalie Bain-Hammond has earned a starting spot with the Houston Dash, becoming the first former Northern Kentucky high school player to sign with a National Women's Soccer League team.
The Park Hills school's 2021 alum signed with Houston on April 10 and joined the club earlier in August after graduating from Xavier University in May and marrying Luke Hammond in July. The Dash announced the signing as a contract through the 2026 season, noting Bain-Hammond had joined for preseason as a non-roster invitee.
She has appeared in four games as a middle defender, coming off the bench twice before cracking the starting lineup for the Dash's last two matches.
Her most recent start came Sunday, Aug. 23, in Houston's 1-0 loss to Bay FC at PayPal Park in San Jose, California, before a crowd of 12,548. In the two games she started, the Dash went 1-1.
From state champion to All-American
The path from NDA to the pros ran through a dominant high school career and four standout years at Xavier.
As a senior Panda in 2021, Bain scored the lone goal in Notre Dame Academy's 1-0 state championship victory over South Oldham. That NDA squad finished 28-0-1, allowing just four goals all season. Bain earned first-team all-state honors and was named USA Today National Player of the Year.
At Xavier, she became the program's first three-time All-American and won Big East Defensive Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons as a junior and senior. She helped the Musketeers post 12 shutout victories in the fall 2025 season and earned an invitation to the U.S. National Team Development Camp.
What's ahead
The NKY Tribune reported that Bain-Hammond waited to begin her pro career until after finishing her degree and getting married.
Now she's chasing a playoff spot. Houston sits in ninth place in the NWSL standings with seven wins, nine losses and five draws through 21 games. Head coach Fabrice Gautrat's squad needs to climb one spot over its final nine regular-season matches to reach the November playoffs.
