Beechwood put up 69 points in a Homecoming shutout of Gallatin County on Friday, Oct. 16, while Dixie Heights controlled its district matchup against Boone County the same night in Edgewood.
The Tigers (8-0) led 35-0 after the first quarter and kept pouring it on, according to LinkNKY's weekly roundup. Beechwood has outscored its four Class 2A, District 5 opponents 237-7 this season.
Head coach Noel Rash, who returned to the Fort Mitchell sideline this year after three seasons away, won 200 games in his first 17 seasons at Beechwood and eight state championships, according to a LinkNKY preseason preview. The Tigers entered the week ranked No. 1 in the Class 2A statewide media poll with 15 first-place votes, according to the Oct. 14 statewide media poll.
Beechwood plays Bracken County next in Brooksville.
Dixie Heights handles Boone County
Dixie Heights scored on its second offensive play and took command, Local 12 reported. Quarterback Brycen Schatzman connected with Parks Vonderhaar for a long touchdown pass to set the tone against the Rebels.
The Colonels led 34-3 at halftime. Both Local 12 and the Northern Kentucky Tribune reported the final score as 34-3, while LinkNKY's roundup listed it as 49-3. The sources also differ on Dixie Heights' season record: Local 12 reported the Colonels improved to 6-3, while LinkNKY listed them at 4-5. The win secured a home playoff game for Dixie Heights, according to LinkNKY.
Dixie Heights' defense held Boone County to a single field goal. The Colonels finished with more than 300 yards of total offense, according to Local 12.
Boone County (2-5 entering the game) had leaned on its leading rusher, senior running back Malik Johnson, all season. Johnson led all Northern Kentucky players with 1,205 rushing yards entering the week and was the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) Class 5A district rushing leader, according to LinkNKY.
The schedule tested Dixie Heights all year. Head coach Pat Burke knew it would. "We play everybody. We start out with Simon Kenton, then we have Beechwood, Covington Catholic and Ryle … We have to be able to compete with them, match their level of physicality and their level of success," Burke said in an August preseason preview.
The Colonels get a week off before hosting Ryle on Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. to close the regular season.
