The National Weather Service is urging Kenton County residents to stay weather-aware on Tuesday, July 21, as severe thunderstorms capable of damaging winds and flash flooding are expected to move through the area.
The NWS Wilmington, Ohio office issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook at 4:01 a.m. Monday, July 20, covering Kenton County and surrounding northern Kentucky communities. Thunderstorms are expected to move across the area through the day Tuesday, with the highest-risk period running from afternoon into evening, according to the outlook.
The primary threat is damaging wind. The NWS also noted large hail, an isolated tornado, and very heavy rainfall capable of producing localized flash flooding.
Recent flooding adds urgency
The outlook arrives as Kenton County communities are still dealing with effects of recent flooding. On Monday, July 14, floodwaters damaged the Edgewood city building badly enough to force cancellation of the Monday, July 20 council meeting. The city posted that its next regularly scheduled meeting will be Monday, August 3, at 6:30 p.m.
The NWS Wilmington office also confirmed a Cincinnati-area flash flood event on Friday, July 17, just four days before Tuesday's storm threat.
That pattern matters. Saturated ground from repeated storms means even moderate rainfall can trigger flash flooding on roads and in low-lying areas across Fort Mitchell, Crestview Hills, Edgewood, Villa Hills, Crescent Springs, Lakeside Park, and Fort Wright.
What's driving the storms
The storm system is associated with a cold front moving through the Ohio Valley, according to the National Weather Service. The front is crossing the Upper Midwest and pushing into the Ohio Valley, bringing the potential for severe weather across portions of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic.
Road safety
Kenton County has closed roads during past high-water events in unincorporated areas and advises residents to never drive through floodwaters. During an April 2025 flooding event, the Kenton County Fiscal Court posted on X: "Turn around, don't drown."
That advice holds Tuesday. Barriers on flooded roads are there for a reason.
Outdoor events
Edgewood's Tuesday evening concert at Presidents Park, scheduled for 7 p.m. July 21, may be cancelled under the city's rain policy. Residents can sign up for Edgewood's REACH ALERT system for cancellation notifications.
