Dr. Denise Fritsch, a lifelong Kenton County resident who started her career as a children's librarian at the very system she'll now lead, will take over as executive director of the Kenton County Public Library on Saturday, August 1.

The Board of Trustees announced Fritsch's appointment Wednesday, July 22, following a nationwide search. She succeeds Dave Schroeder, who retires Friday, July 31, after nearly 40 years with the system and 19 years leading it as executive director.

Fritsch returned to KCPL in July 2025 to manage the library's Career & Job Services Division after spending more than two decades in leadership roles at Gateway Community & Technical College. There she served as dean of institutional effectiveness, workforce development trainer, and director of library and information services.

"Denise has earned the trust and respect of colleagues across the organization, and the Board is excited to see her lead the Library into its next chapter," said Iliana Rosales-Figueroa, president of the Board of Trustees, in the library's announcement.

Fritsch, who holds an Ed.D., brings more than 20 years of experience spanning public libraries, higher education, and workforce development.

What Schroeder leaves behind

Schroeder's 19-year tenure reshaped the library system. Under his leadership, KCPL opened the Latonia Branch, expanded services across the county, strengthened its finances, and earned recognition as one of the nation's leading public library systems, according to the library's announcement.

Fritsch's priorities

Fritsch said she plans to build on Schroeder's work. She said in a statement to the NKyTribune that she is committed to "supporting our outstanding staff, strengthening community partnerships and ensuring the Library continues to inspire lifelong learning, spark imagination and serve everyone in Kenton County."

She will begin working with the Board of Trustees, library staff, and community partners immediately to ensure a smooth handoff when she officially steps into the role August 1. No public welcome event has been announced.
