Kenton County homeowners would see a small property tax rate cut under an ordinance headed for a final vote Sept. 8.

The Kenton County Fiscal Court completed a first reading of the new rates at its Sept. 1 meeting, LINK nky reported. The proposed real estate rate is $0.113 per $100 of assessed value, down from $0.115. The tangible personal property rate would fall from $0.160 to $0.156 per $100.

The watercraft rate stays the same.

Revenue projections

Ordinance No. 226.33, which County Judge/Executive Kris Knochelmann is set to sign, pegs the county's real property assessment at roughly $19.4 billion. At the proposed rate, the General Fund would collect about $20.5 million in real estate tax revenue, plus $1.96 million from personal property and $2.59 million from motor vehicles.

A different direction from Villa Hills

The county's rate cut stands in contrast to at least one Kenton County city. Villa Hills has proposed raising its real property tax rate from $0.209 to $0.215 per $100, above its own compensating rate of $0.207. Mayor Heather H. Jansen signed a notice of public hearing on the increase, scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9, at 6:30 p.m. at Villa Hills City Hall, 719 Rogers Road.

What's next

The Fiscal Court's final vote is set for Sept. 8, at the Historic Kenton County Courthouse in Independence. Residents who want to weigh in can attend that meeting.
