Sarah Osborne, who turned Dixie Heights into a 34th District softball dynasty, stepped down as head coach on Monday, July 7, ending an eight-season run that produced seven straight district championships and the program's first region title in 15 years.

Osborne, 39, told LINK nky she made the decision to prioritize her family.

"My kids are getting into sports. They are 11 and 7 and I want to be around them more because I realize I've missed a lot," Osborne said. "A big part of it, too, is my assistant, Kristin Elfers, let me know she was leaving the program before the start of this past season. If you had asked me at the end of the season if I was coaching next year, I would have said yes. But I thought about it, talked with my husband, and decided to do this."

Osborne leaves with a 135-114 overall record and a 45-3 mark in district play, according to LINK nky. Her teams outscored opponents 79-9 in those seven district title games.

The crown jewel came in 2019, when Osborne guided the Colonels to the Ninth Region championship, their first since 2004. That earned her 9th Region Coach of the Year honors.

The 2004 connection runs deeper than the record book. Osborne played at Dixie Heights under her maiden name, Sarah Gronefeld, and was a first-team All-State catcher. She was a standout on that 2004 squad, the last Colonel team to win a region title before she delivered one as coach.

After her playing career, Osborne returned to Dixie Heights as a teacher and assistant coach before taking over the head job in 2018. She remains on staff as a teacher at the school.

No successor has been named as of Tuesday, July 15. The Colonels will need to fill both the head coaching and assistant coaching vacancies before the 2027 season, with Elfers having already departed before the 2026 campaign.

Dixie Heights' next head coach will inherit a program that dominated district play for nearly a decade and won a region title under Osborne.
