Devou Park Overlook earned the No. 2 spot among Kentucky's best free urban sunset viewing locations in a national survey, putting a familiar Kenton County destination alongside big-name sites like Brooklyn Bridge Park and Griffith Observatory.
The ranking comes from a survey of 3,042 people conducted by A Mission for Michael, a California-based mental health services nonprofit. The organization asked respondents to identify the best free, public, city-based sunset spots in the country, according to results published July 27. Louisville's Big Four Bridge took Kentucky's top spot, with Devou Park Overlook second and Smothers Park in Owensboro third.
The overlook sits at Devou Park's highest peak, just beyond the Drees Pavilion, and offers a sweeping view across the Ohio River toward downtown Cincinnati. Bridges, hills, and the surrounding urban landscape frame the scene.
The 700-acre park, managed by the City of Covington, is open every day from dawn until dark. Admission is free. The overlook features open green space, swings, picnic tables, parking, and ADA-accessible paths. Drees Homes funded a renovation of the overlook area in 2024, according to the park's website. The address is 1201 Park Drive, Covington, KY 41011.
"Sunsets are one of the few experiences that can still make people stop what they are doing and pay attention to the present moment," said Anand Mehta, executive director of A Mission for Michael, in the survey report. "Cities do not always need to build something new or expensive to support mental well-being."
The organization, which provides residential mental health treatment, framed the survey around the psychological benefits of outdoor experiences. Among respondents, 84% said watching a sunrise or sunset improves their mood. Nearly nine in 10 said easy access to attractive outdoor viewing spots improves quality of life in a city. Respondents reported they were willing to travel an average of 21 minutes to reach a good viewing location.
