The 1997 Beechwood Tigers football team, which rolled through a perfect 14-0 season, landed at No. 27 in NKY's "50 Greatest NKY Prep Sports Teams in 50 Days" countdown, published July 18.

For Fort Mitchell, the recognition is another chapter in what head coach Mike Yeagle built on Beechwood Road. The '97 title was the program's sixth state championship of the 1990s, part of a decade in which the Tigers went 126-17, won seven state titles, posted three undefeated seasons, and strung together a Northern Kentucky-record 38 consecutive victories, according to KHSAA records.

The championship game itself was a statement. Beechwood had beaten Harrodsburg 21-14 in overtime for the 1996 Class 1A title at Cardinal Stadium in Louisville. A year later, the Tigers returned to the same venue and left no doubt, blanking Alvis Johnson's Pioneers 26-0.

No other Kentucky program won more titles in the 1990s.

Yeagle, who compiled a career record of 183-27 across his tenure at Beechwood, was the first Kentucky high school football coach to win four consecutive state championships (1991-1994). He added back-to-back titles in 1996 and 1997 before winning again in 1999 and 2004, finishing with eight total.

Beechwood has since grown its championship total to 18 state titles across all classifications, most recently winning the Class 2A crown in 2024. But the '97 squad holds a particular place in the program's arc: the peak season of a dynasty decade that no Kentucky program has matched since.
